WooCommerce or Shopify? Choosing the Right Platform for Your E-shop

It is the first question almost every new e-shop owner asks. Both platforms can run a successful store, and the right choice depends on your products, your budget and how much control you want over the result.

Shopify is a hosted service. Hosting, security updates and the checkout are handled for you, setup is quick and the admin is simple. In return you pay a monthly subscription, many features come as paid apps, and you can only do what the platform allows.

WooCommerce runs on WordPress, on your own hosting. There is no platform subscription, you own the code and the data, and almost anything can be customised: Greek payment gateways and couriers, complex pricing, B2B catalogues, integration with your ERP. The trade-off is that someone needs to keep it updated, secure and fast.

As a rule of thumb, a small catalogue that needs to go live quickly fits Shopify well. A store with specific local requirements, many product variations, integrations or ambitious growth plans usually gets more value from WooCommerce. Whatever you choose, decide with the next three years in mind, not only the launch.
