Local SEO: How Local Businesses Get Found on Google Maps
2 min read
When someone searches for a dentist near them or a café in their neighbourhood, Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular result. Being in that map pack is often worth more than ranking first organically, because the people searching are ready to call, visit or book. This is what local SEO is about.
The foundation is a complete Google Business Profile: the right category, opening hours, phone number, real photos and a link to your website. Your business name, address and phone number must be written exactly the same way on the profile, on the website and in online directories, so that Google trusts the information.
The website does the rest. A page for each service and each area you serve, your address in the footer, an embedded map and structured data for local businesses help Google connect your site with local searches. Fast loading on mobile matters too, because most local searches happen on a phone.
Finally, reviews. Ask satisfied customers to leave a review and reply to every one, positive or negative. Steady, recent reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they are also what convinces a new customer to choose you over the business next door.
